History:- Harman Blennerhassett, a wealthy Irish aristocrat, settled on the wilderness island in 1798, where he built a magnificent mansion. Designed in the Palladian style (like Mount Vernon), the house contained 7,000 square feet of floor space. Its rooms were furnished with furniture purchased in London and Baltimore, oriental carpets, oil paintings, and porcelain made in Paris. The hardware on some of the interior doors was made of silver. Very educational! Love all the arrowheads from WV and Ohio
Due to the bad weather, the island was closed the day we visited. We had the opportunity to walk through the museum. Three floors of history (elevator or stairwell availble), restrooms on site. Benches at the entry level. Very interesting if you like historical stuff.
Had a variety of gifts! My favorite is the bug catchers! Great for in door use and out door use ! Very stylish as well
