It is unnerving when you jump on the bike, turn the pedals and nothing happens. The freehub had broken, i.e. it spins both ways. My friends said the pawls are stuck, and a good clean might help, so long as you don't lose the ball bearings. After removing the cassette, I found I didn't have the tools to go any further.
