We went through AAA to rent a car in Madiera and were initially so pleased to be going through a Maine based company. Unfortunately, because of a weather related flight cancellation from Lisbon to Funchal, we missed our pickup time. I called the only number that was provided to me on the rental voucher (the only thing I had from Auto Europe), it was for the Avis desk at the pickup location and they told us changes needed to be done by the booking agent. A huge mistake using this company for our car rental booking on-line. Lots of details I could share, but my rating reflects my dissatisfaction. Wording on "sceen shots" my booking was for "total rental" cost, but actual paperwork came & was only a deposit! Paperwork also gave tips for a great car rental experience. My tip is rental car bookings should only be made directly with a reputable nationwide car company, not 3rd party. I believe this was a scam. BEWARE OF ADDITIONAL CHARGES!!!!! At the pick up counter in Italy I was told snow chain rentals are mandatory at a cost of $211.15. Amazon Italy sells Goodyear snow chains for €28.38.
I would not recommend renting a car through this company. They are not a direct car rental provider but simply act as a middleman between customers and airport rental companies. Unfortunately, their service was neither professional nor transparent. The total cost of my rental ended up being nearly three times higher than the amount shown during booking. I’ll be using a different company next time.
I have mixed reviews about this place. First, I messed up my booking days and realized the day before. I spoke with a lovely lady that helped me actually find the same kind of vehicle with a 30$ refund (since the prices are live they can vary a lot). My only mixed review is that it is not put on the rental car voucher about needing a valid licence for 2 years. I read through the terms and conditions and it did not include this.
