On the expensive side, but high quality and convenience The University Ave. Andronicos Market is a nice little market, and it has an interesting history. It also used to be the Coop Grocery store, back in the 70's. At some point in time the economics of cooperative prosperity collapsed, and Andronicos moved in. Actually those of us in the neighborhood were grateful in a way, because the lines in the store went away. If I lived above it... I still wouldn't shop there. Anyone operating on a budget should know better than to even poke around at Andronico's. Maybe once every 3 or 4 blue moons they have something on supersale, but your best bet is a place like Safeway/PakNSave.
Excellent store but slightly high prices If you into great bargains try Trader Joes- but if you want quality foods, and a very nice supermarket shopping experience try Andronicos. I love the bakery sections- you can get an awesome muffin and coffee for about 2.50. the cheese selection is great as well
The worst of the Andronico's – always crowded, parking is hard during rush hours. but compared to the lucky's or safeway's of the world, andronico's is still heads and shoulders above the rest.
Very overpriced! – The sandwiches used to be 6.50 at the deli, now they are 7.00. What a rip off. The whole store is one giant rip off. If you want to pay more for groceries, I would recommend Berkeley Bowl!
Specialty items you can't get just anywhere! – Holiday gourmet treats. Shop early for the best selections... the best varieties of Tea, including Peet's. hard to find "double cream" and some imported butter like "Plugra". My personal favorite and the best anywhere, you have to try the "Buffalo Wings" from the Deli Hot case!!! They even take American Express!
Go for the glamour at this extremely well-stocked and shopper-friendly supermarket. – In Short Organic beans, grains, and pastas are sold in bulk, and beautiful fresh produce beckons from clay pots and baskets. Health food here doesn't cater only to vegetarians; Andronico's offers healthy options to carnivores too. The seafood counter provides lots of nutritional facts and charts, and you pick your own fish from the large fish tanks-how much fresher can it get?
