If you’re looking for a place where residents are treated as though they no longer matter, this is unfortunately the right place. I am a personal trainer for one of the residents at this home, and I found my client severely dehydrated, with darkened skin, alone in her room. The explanation I was given was: “She is independent and refused to eat, so we didn’t push her.” That response was shocking. I received this flyer in my building mailbox and found the visual messaging deeply uncomfortable. The residents and guests are shown as overwhelmingly white, while every clearly visible service or care role appears to be performed by a person of colour. Whether intentional or not, this gives the impression of a racially coded hierarchy: white residents enjoying the lifestyle, while racialized people are most visibly positioned as serving, assisting, or providing care.
