Excellent sculpture! Great story behind it
Beautiful and meaningful tribute
A clever and somber tribute to the Merchant Mariners. My father served as a Merchant Marine during the Vietnam War and this statue, including a doomed shipmate succumbing to the rising tide twice daily, makes a quick detour on the way to your ferry to Liberty and Ellis Islands.
I found this very interesting sculpture just past Castle Clinton along the water front. It honors merchant mariners who died at sea particular during WWII. The sculptor is Marisol Escobar. It depicts sailors trying to rescue one man in the water. Dedicated in 1991.
