The line to check out was over half-way to the other end of the store, and this was mid-day on a weekday. There was only one cashier working; she seemed stressed and overwhelmed and, even though there were other employees visible in the store, another lane wasn't opened. If you are going to take away the self-checkouts, you need more lanes open consistenly.
