I came to A-1 a year or so ago as a referral from an associate to "give them a try" as they were brand new. I also met owner that day, and being a licensed contractor he seemed really happy to see me come there instead of Mountain Recycling where we had been going for some years prior. From our work, I normally make 2-3 trips annually with my trailer with copper pipe, romex wire, cast iron, aluminum products, water heaters, etc and owner then said he had best prices around and wanted to keep me as a long time customer. He even told guys then to give me special attention and "do me right".
Well, having been there several times now, seems things are not so any longer there. Takes a long time to process your metal as they critique it to an extreme, including looking into every aluminum can you bring, Along with the price they paid me today, I feel I am being taken advantage of as I looked at NC i-Scrap pricing today after returning to my office, and even called another scrap yard, and seems I was paid about 40-50% of what the supposed scrap prices are to be in NC today...
These are the weights they say I brought in and payout::
I had (3) electric water heaters (only classify them as scrap metal), 540lbs of scrap metal/cast/steel, 40lbs of 1/2" & 3/4" copper tubing, 2lbs #1 clean copper wire, 33lbs copper romex wire, 1lb old 60amp copper SEU cable, 68lbs sheet steel (old slider door frames, Al threshholds, AL window frames, AL fixture cans), 10lbs Aluminum romex wire, 81lbs crushed cans and total payout of only $217.62... Just seems very low for all the product we brought to them this time. We use 52 gallon plastic barrels for our metals which they subtract 18lbs a piece for.
Last visit we made there, they made big fit with a lot of yellow brass I brought in saying it needed to be broken down even more than it had been, and gave me a very low price (1.30/lb less than what brass states), and we go as far as we can with brass faucets, PRV's, T&P valves, brass manifolds, etc and yet they say it is considered mixed metal and not pay clean brass prices... I even had (2) catalytic converters from my work truck which just had entire new exhaust system done, and they gave me only $5.00 total, saying they have to be careful they are not stolen !! I gave them this one last time and feel they are taking advantage of people, and especially someone like myself with nearly 40 years in industry and working with all types of metals and equipment for years to know what is what with all of it. I am not going to be played by this scrapyard any longer. I already know persons who truck their metals out of State as NC pricing seems to be very low overall and below par of what other States are paying... I have heard others complain lately about these guys, but wanted to see myself one last time, and now I write this review.
I thought they'd remember me as a local construction contractor who frequents scrapyards annually, but felt like I was a stranger yet again today when I took this load to A-1... I stood at window 15 minutes after I gave them my ticket and license, before another guy came up from lot, and they put him ahead of me and paid him, and yet I waited another 15-20 minutes to finally get my payment from them. All total I was at A-1 1 1/2 hours just to dispose of scrap metal...?
I treat my customers in the Unifour area we service with 100% professional results and respect every damn day. I go to these people to offload our carefully separated metals from jobs we do, and feel like they are trying to pull a fast one over on me each time I go there, making comments and excuses about the various metals we bring in...
I am going elsewhere after this. My time is valuable and I do not like wasting it nor being taken advantage of by another business in the Hickory area that is supposed to be upstanding and honest in their dealings.
