9th and 9th came to life when alternative businesses moved in during the 1970s. Stone Balloon Waterbeds, Skin Company Productions, Cosmic Aeroplane, Nature's Way, etc. They represented a counter culture in Salt Lake similar to Haight- Ashbury in San Francisco. Today, the place is gentrified but at least independent businesses remain instead of chain restaurants/stores.
